This book might be good for upper primary or middle school students. It's light and chatty. Someone who is interested in serious history will find it disappointing. Apparently the book was written by a committee, "Captivating History." The individuals associated with it, perhaps understandably don't disclose their names. They cite no works written in Spanish or involving a Mexican research team. The book is sadly lacking in photos, even though if you go to these places and visit the ruins, or visit the nearby museums you can take pictures. There is no evidence that any of the authors have ever been to Mexico, although it's not far or difficult to get there. One consequent slip-up is that they say that the area of the Zapotec civilization in the Oaxaca Valley gets about 500mm of rain--"that is 2 inches a year." No, that's 20 inches a year. The area is dry, but it's not a desert, as anyone who has been there would see. They grow corn. This area carries through across the section, in comments like, rainfall was negligible. The book is also filled with gratuitous assumptions about the psychology of the people they're writing about. Writing of Mounte Alban Phase 3 they say "the city was in decline as the people became complacent and their ideas began to stagnate." What sort of archaeological evidence might possibly exist to support this conclusion? The hypothesis is possible, but it's far from a conclusion. It might just flow from a populist armchair theory of how civilizations rise and fall. There have to be better books available for popular audiences on this topic. If you yearn to know the dates and stale transactions of mesoamerican cultures, this is your book. Typos aside, there is nothing about the culture, daily lives, religion, rituals, or really anything other than general dates and names that reads like a timeline. This book could serve a purpose, but only if you want dates of kings and who they were at war with.
